Titos – African Grey Parrot
Titos – African Grey Parrot is a highly intelligent and fascinating bird species native to the dense rainforests of West and Central Africa. They are known for their remarkable cognitive abilities, exceptional memory, and extraordinary mimicry skills. There are two main subspecies: the Congo African Grey (Psittacus erithacus) and the Timneh African Grey (Psittacus timneh).
One of the standout features of African Grey Parrots is their ability to mimic sounds and voices, learning and repeating hundreds of words, phrases, and household noises. Some African Greys have demonstrated the ability to use words meaningfully, associating words with their proper contexts, emotions, and objects. The famous African Grey, Alex, under the care of animal psychologist Dr. Irene Pepperberg, could identify colors, shapes, and numbers and even expressed feelings like boredom or hunger.
In the wild, African Grey Parrots are social creatures, often forming large flocks and communicating using calls, whistles, and mimicry. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, nuts, seeds, and leafy matter, but in captivity, a balance diet with fresh vegetables, pellets, and occasional fruits is recommend. African Grey Parrots are long-live birds, often reaching 40 to 60 years in captivity with proper care, and some even surpassing 70 years. Due to habitat loss, poaching, and illegal pet trade, they are now list as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
