Alex – Red-necked amazon, also known as Alex, is a captivating and colorful parrot native to the tropical forests of Dominica. This medium-sized bird, typically measuring around 40 centimeters (16 inches), is known for its vibrant plumage, engaging personality, and intelligence. Its distinctive red feathers on its neck and upper chest give it its common name. Alex is also know for his remarkable vocal abilities, mimicking human speech, environmental sounds, and other bird calls. In the wild, they communicate through squawks, whistles, and shrieks, which resonate through Dominica’s rainforests.
The Red-necked Amazon is endemic to Dominica, found nowhere else in the world, and thrives in the island’s high-altitude rainforests, especially in protected areas like Morne Diablotin National Park and Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Its natural habitat consists of tall, mature trees where it nests in cavities and forages for a variety of fruits, nuts, seeds, and flowers. Favorite foods include the fruits of the Bois Cotlette and gum trees.
