Maxx – Red-browed amazon, also known as the Red-browed Parrot, is a rare and striking parrot species found in the Atlantic Forests of eastern Brazil. This vibrant bird is celebrated for its vivid plumage and charming personality, but unfortunately, it is currently classified as endangered due to habitat loss and illegal trapping for the pet trade. The Red-browed Amazon is a medium-sized parrot, typically measuring between 32 to 35 centimeters in length and weighing around 350 to 400 grams. Its most distinctive feature is the bold red band across the forehead, which gives the species its common name. The crown is bluish, blending into a bright green plumage that covers most of the body. The cheeks, nape, and throat display shades of bluish-green, and there’s a subtle yellowish tint on the underparts.

The wings are mostly green, adorned with splashes of red on the bend of the wing and primary coverts. The tail is green with hints of blue and yellow on the underside. The beak is pale ivory, and the eyes are surround by a narrow ring of bare white skin, with an iris that ranges from orange to reddish-brown. Males and females appear almost identical, with minimal sexual dimorphism visible to the naked eye. Red-browed Amazons are social and intelligent birds, usually seen in pairs or small flocks. Their call is loud, shrill, and carries over long distances, a common characteristic among Amazon parrots. They are active during the day, spending much of their time foraging in the forest canopy. Their diet mainly consists of fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, flowers, and leaves.

Breeding season occurs during the autumn months (November to February), with the female laying 3 to 4 eggs in tree cavities. The incubation period lasts about 26 to 28 days, with the female primarily responsible for brooding while the male provides food. Chicks fledge approximately 8 to 9 weeks after hatching.

The Red-browed Amazon is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated population of fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. Major threats include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and illegal capture for the pet trade. Several conservation efforts are underway, including habitat protection, awareness campaigns, and captive breeding programs to help preserve this beautiful and ecologically valuable species.
